I have a side project in the works. I am working through each section of Psalm 119. Today I was in 9 – 16, Beth, that is the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet. You are probably aware that the psalm is divided into 22, 8 verse segments. Following the Hebrew alphabet the verses in each section start with the same letter of the alphabet, the first section Aleph, the second section Beth, the third Gimel, etc.
Looking at Beth, note what the Psalmist says about the Word’s impact on him:
But also notice that the psalmist acknowledges that he cannot apply the Word on his own.
This is both our need to be in the Word and our total dependence on the Lord for our understanding. This dual need is echoed in the New Testament, one place I have seen it recently is Ephesians 1:9, God grants us the grace to understand His will.
By the way yesterday’s blog post was not published correctly, if you did not see it you can read it here.
Looking at Beth, note what the Psalmist says about the Word’s impact on him:
- Vs 9 – keeps him pure
- Vs 10 – keeps him from sinning against God
But also notice that the psalmist acknowledges that he cannot apply the Word on his own.
- Vs 10 – do not let me wander
- Vs 12 – Teach me Thy statutes.
This is both our need to be in the Word and our total dependence on the Lord for our understanding. This dual need is echoed in the New Testament, one place I have seen it recently is Ephesians 1:9, God grants us the grace to understand His will.
