Being Led

How do we Abide?
Yesterday I suggested that even though we are created and equipped by a sovereign Lord for a specific task that we would still not be able to do that task without abiding in Christ, John 15:5.
How can we abide and be led by the Spirit? Thoughts at DTTB.
So the question becomes how does one abide in Him?  The answer may be in the same context in one verse, John 15:7.  Note this is a conditional statement, technically it deal with something that probably will happen.  Note the two conditions:
  • You abide in me
  • My words abide in you
Then note the result of the condition:
  • Ask and it will be done.
How are we Led?
It looks like whatever else may be involved that the Word of God and prayer that results from having the Word of God abide in us is some aspect of abiding.  The context of John 15:5, 7 is right in the middle of the final hours Jesus spent with His disciples.  John recorded this in 13 – 17.  One of the key things Christ told the 12 was in 14 and 16.  That the Holy Spirit was coming to lead them into truth, John 14:25 – 31 and John 16:13 – 14.  So it seems like we are to depend on the Holy Spirit to lead us into truth in the Word and then begin to pray as that truth abides in us.

It seems to me that to seek guidance or being led by the Spirit requires both being in the Word and praying over what we find in there.
