Jeremiah 13:15 is one of those verses that humbles and exhorts. It is short and to the point. Two points, a warning, and the reason for both the points and the warning:
The reason – The Lord has spoken.
The creator of the universe has chosen to speak to us through His Word. Makes pretty good sense to pay attention and do what He says.
Not to do so does not raise to the level of stupid.
- Listen
- Give heed – that is obey or apply what you hear

Short, simple and to the point - a whole lot like a dagger thrust. Thank you for the painful reminder.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe there's a third significant point: the relationship of not listening and giving heed to "haughty." I wonder if perhaps the inability to hear and heed is directly related to being haughty. Being haughty (along with several other sinful characteristics) deceives me into assuming I'm right. Why would I need to listen to God? And since in my flesh I probably won't like what I'm challenged to do (or quit) I'm not at all inclined to heed. Jesus' words In Matt.10:14,15 should give me pause as well. You spoke, Mike, sometime ago to the issue of people saying something like when given godly counsel, "Well, that's not what I'm hearing from God." His Word so often comes through His people, in this case Jeremiah and then the N.T. Apostles. I need to be extremely cautious when I reject what the Bible says (of course) as well as His people He has brought into my life. Sorrowfully I've had too much of the wrong side of this with my own wife....
Exactly, good stuff.
