Crushed

Hard Times
This has been a hard week.  I say that but it has not been a hard week in terms of what Paul endured.  But nevertheless I have felt crushed by several things that have happened in the past few days.  I should not be surprised, after all Jesus promised it would be like this, John 16:33.  That doesn’t make it fun.  I think I will add John 16:33 to the list of passages in the Bible of which I am not very fond.
Crushed
Paul’s Example
Back to Paul.  When I studied 2 Corinthians in the past year or so I made a mental note that those who are engaged in trying to help others in their walk with God should from time to time read and study this letter.  I took my own advice today.  I re-read 2 Corinthians 6:4 – 10.  Based on what Paul faced I do not have a lot about which to complain.

But I still feel crushed.

The Solution…
The good thing is that what I have been reading in Psalm 119 is true.  The Word is a refuge in the storms, trouble, tribulation this life throws at us.  I just have to claw my way back into it to get that solace.

  1. Psalm 38, 39, & 40 have been an encouragement to me during the "crushed" times of my life.

  3. I have to agree with Maximum. Of course already in the M.E our brethren are facing Paul-level challenges. Jesus also promised that He would tarry for "a little while longer, until the number of (the martyrs) who were to be killed...was completed." We don't know just what time He was talking about, but it's been 2000 thousand years (just two days in God's time, 2 Peter 3:8), since He said it. The number is growing significantly daily.

I'm not attempting to imply that His return is near; Jesus said we absolutely won't know until it happens. But anyone who is at all alert about what is going on in our world and our country can see a slow but perceptible slide in the same direction.

Will it be in my life-time? Perhaps not. My grandchildren? Perhaps not. But what I am sure of is more difficult times for Christ followers is coming soon, and will be here with increasing frequency (we see what Christian bakers are facing, e.g.). All this on top of the circumstance of personal disaster we face daily.

As a result of the crushing events of the last eight months in my life and those of my family I have concluded that my "light affliction" is of course not at all like Paul's, or even many friends I know right at this time. But they are MY afflictions, and they the worst I've ever faced; relentless, exhausting, robbing me of hope and motivation....but for the Word and living presence of God.

Nothing easy about it. And I only expect it to get worse as I continue to walk this cursed earth - both for me and my family. But I also know (regardless of any feelings I have) that He has measured His grace to me proportional to my desperate needs. Every morning I beg Him for what He has promised to give - His inexhaustible, super-abundant grace. And I remind Him (myself, really) many times through the day of that need. It always relates back to His promises.

Thank you for transparently sharing our only recourse, Mike, to always get back to the Bible. What He says is the only thing that counts, and that can help!
